It's all part of his grand "pbi are friends with everyone" campaign (although he voices contempt for everyone but pbi in private!

That and the free places he and Yith are getting - and that his boss is going - and that he can play as Hallams. Still, the only 'PBI' that are doing now are Barry, Anne, Gadge & Yith - everyone else has dropped out I think!

*everyone* was ready well before the scheduled start period of 10am (which *never* normally happens). CiA events have been spot on starting since the second event IIRC. (Always Steiner the last one rummaging in kit/boot!)
And their 'one hit and your dead rule' that defined the 'realism' of PBI games is out of the window!
I'm not sure what the 'reenactors' made of it yet - no one has made a comment.
He is very into Josh's territory now - this was without doubt a LARP game, Yith told me so himself. And ‘combat missions’ is a Josh-ism if ever I heard one.
Spending the evening playing boardgames was just frankly - you can see they are all warhammer-types.
No doubt they had fun and I'm delighted PBI have struck out on the LARP game route, it leaves the realism to us.

Having read through the comments, I thought that some of them were a little "reserved", not just PD's. I really think that a large majority of players aren't very interested in LARP heavy games.

Gawd knows why Gadge promotes his games as having authentic military tactics and reenacting standards. Sure they are fun and I bet I would have enjoyed it had I gone, but he comes from a Games Workshop/board game/LARP angle (as do many of the players there on Sunday) so 'let's pretend' and fantasy have a big influence on the game style.

It's deeper than that. It's about control and desire. From the outset and the first outcome, Stig, Karl and I knew this was not a level playing field and that we were being misdirected.
The outcome was a foregone conclusion and there was no scope for individual play or tactics. I in fact took a squad to carry out a task - Gadge interposed, sent half my squad away and left two of us to be knocked out by a saboteur in our midst. Thus allowing "his brits" through the choke point we had put them in. We were told if we shot civilians we would affect the outcome of the game and possibly lose the advantage - this was to allow the double agents free rein. I have lots of instances I could relate but it would only bore you = You already know how it goes......Nah - a long drive, a super location but a flawed concept. He asked us for frank and honest feedback. I decided silence was the most diplomatic response I could give.
Give me a balanced day, strong leadership and people on each side striving to win. And on a personal note Dave - people with a foot in both camps COULD be a liability.

Well, this is the war gaming/LARP thing - scripted, formulaic, structured, ruled.Gadge's 'combat missions' are stated to be small games, the outcome of the first dictates the scenario of the second and so on, following a tree of possible game flows and outcomes.
The reality is something different. For it to work you have to know that you are being manipulated (and part of a gamemaster's plan) and just go with the flow, bugger all you can do about it but accept you are going to be shafted regardless of your endeavour.
For those that like this then great - Josh does this for some of his specialist events (usually nothing to do with WW2) and makes a decent income from them - House of Mystery sort of thing. Some people love it. Dressing up as cowboys, or Victorians, or arch-warriors of Argon.
But it isn't man against man, personal effort and endeavour, grit and determination that the CiA team and I are seeking. We haven't quite got there yet but....
Well, that just goes to show that PBI games are written by PBI, for PBI. I always suspected it and had tried to put aside my reservations but, it looks like they've reverted to type with my departure.

I've never really understood why PBI games are so popular. Sure, we had a laugh at a couple of them, but mostly when we went off-script and decided to do our own thing.
Pete's and my diversion along the river providing one of my finest airsoft moments without a shot fired. Oh, and of course, hamming it up as partisans.
Feck all to do with airsofting or mil-sim or anything. Just brilliant.

BTW, I have just noticed Chief Chintheriething was at Alsos. I had no idea he was there nor can think of who he might have been... except that at one stage I was being held under guard and in a bid to escape hurled the contents of a water canteen at a guard and legged it. On re-capture there was a player who was fuming because his uniform got some drops of water on it - that sounds like one of Yith's mates!
I despair. Really please that PD saw through the gayness though. I hope he spreads the word.
